How have you been experiencing dis-ease?

Here are expressions of separation from within, and you may recognize yourself in some of what follows. If any of these feel familiar, know this: these are not signs of brokenness. They are signs that a young person did what they had to do. And they are also invitations — to come home to yourself, perhaps for the very first time.

This is the work. And you don't have to do it alone.

In Your Mind:

  • A constant inner voice that critiques, doubts, or diminishes, as though a harsh observer took up residence long ago

  • Difficulty trusting your own perceptions, often deferring to others to tell you what is real or true

  • A mind that rarely rests: turning over worries, replaying conversations, rehearsing futures that haven't arrived

  • Fogginess or difficulty remembering — as though parts of your story have gone quiet to protect you

  • Beliefs, deeply held, that you are too much, not enough, fundamentally flawed, or somehow different from everyone else

  • Difficulty making decisions, fearing that choosing wrongly will have consequences that feel enormous

  • A tendency to live in the past or the future, rarely feeling at home in the present moment

In Your Heart:

  • A longing and an ache you can't quite name for something that feels just out of reach

  • Emotional numbness, flatness, or a sense of moving through life behind glass

  • Feelings that arrive as floods, overwhelming and without clear origin or don't seem to arrive at all

  • Deep difficulty receiving love, care, or kindness without suspicion or discomfort

  • A pattern of feeling most yourself when caring for others, and most lost when asked, “what do you need?”

  • Grief that surfaces unexpectedly — for a childhood that wasn't, or a self that has never fully been given space to be

  • Loneliness even in the presence of people who love you

In Your Body:

  • A sense of not quite inhabiting your body — watching your life rather than living it

  • Chronic tension held in the jaw, shoulders, chest, belly, or hips as though bracing for something

  • Difficulty knowing when you are hungry, tired, in pain, or in need of rest

  • A body that startles easily, or one that feels perpetually on alert

  • Physical symptoms that come and go without clear medical explanation

  • Disconnection from pleasure, from touch, from rest, from the simple enjoyment of being in a body

  • An uneasy relationship with your own reflection — a sense that who you see does not match

In Your Relationships and the World:

  • Shapeshifting to match the room and becoming who others need, losing track of who you are

  • Difficulty with conflict, often choosing silence or appeasement to preserve connection

  • Attracting or staying in relationships that echo early dynamics of pain, unpredictability, or emotional unavailability

  • A sense that you must earn your place — in love, in friendship, at work

  • Feeling safest alone, yet aching for genuine closeness

  • Giving generously from an empty well and not knowing how to stop or ask to be replenished
